Pet Dental Health Month

By Tamara Sevigny
As pet owners we need to be aware of the importance of regular teeth brushing and checkups. Many pet owners take time to walk and groom their pets but tend to fail when it comes to dental hygiene. According to the American Veterinary Dental Society, more than 85 percent of dogs and cats show signs of oral disease by age four.
Pet owners should be aware that all types of pets are at risk for dental problems, which can lead to other health problems. Pets should be examined by a veterinarian annually to detect any problems early on. In between visits it is important for pet owners to check often for warning signs of any problems, which may include:
- Bad breath
- Tartar buildup on the teeth
- Swollen, receding or bleeding gums
- Fractured or abscessed teeth
- Change in eating habits
Gingivitis and periodontal disease in dogs and cats have become common, and pet owners should take some simple measures to be sure their pets have good oral health.
Use these simple steps to ensure proper pet dental health care:
1. Visit a veterinarian at least once a year.
2. Get professional dental care/cleanings when recommended by your veterinarian.
3. Give proper dental care at home including brushing and checking for any signs of problems.
4. Return to your veterinarian for regular dental checkups every six to 18 months or as recommended by your veterinarian.
