How Can I Be A Responsible Pet Owner?

Seeing that puppy in the window gives us the opportunity to let the mind explore the possibilities of the joys of owning a pet, but do we also think of the responsibilities of actually owning one? Ownership is not just a privilege, but a responsibility. In this day and age, we need to take ownership seriously. Your pet will rely on you for so many things and you have to consider whether you are prepared to manage life and pet ownership combined. Here are a few examples.
Consider your lifestyle
If you lead a busy life, and don’t spend much time at home, maybe a dog is not a good idea. A cat might be a better choice, as they are a bit more independent than dogs. They can be left indoors using a litter box. Dogs need to be taken out several times a day, and dogs are a bit more emotionally and socially needy.
Size and Breed
What breed you choose is important as well. If you live in a one room apartment, a Great Dane would be a difficult dog to have; that could make your living space more cramped. Dogs that require an active lifestyle will not be the best choice for someone who is a home body or couch potato. You need to look at your lifestyle and choose your breed appropriately.
Veterinary Care
How you care for your animal helps determine just how responsible you are. Yearly exams to maintain your dog’s health are vital in keeping your pet alive longer.
Unexpected health issues can, and will, arise. You need to be prepared for the treatments that may be required along with the financial burdens that you will incur.
Safety
You need to look from the dog’s perspective and be certain that you do what you can to prevent accidents from happening. Just as you would child proof, you need to dog proof your home. Poisonous plants, electrical cords, household paints, cleaners, etc. should be removed from the dog’s living area as they may pose a temptation for the dog. When you leave your dog at home alone, depending on your dog, you may need to crate them for their safety and security or confine them to a specific room. A car safety belt or crate may be a good idea for traveling in the car. A properly fitted collar and sturdy leash are also something to add to the safety list.
A Friend For Life
You will need to set aside time for your companion. You need to let them know how appreciative you are of them, as they see you as the center of their universe. You need to love them as a member of the family. Provide educational and safe toys for them to play with and engage in play time. Give them exercise, a walk, a jog, or even a game of fetch. Depending on the breed you have, you will need to gauge the amount of exercise the animal is going to need.
Training
One of the most vital factors in being a responsible pet owner is showing your dedication to the animal. Train your dog. Attend obedience classes, use a leash in public and never leave your dog unsupervised. Abide by local and state laws. Get your dog certified through AKC as a Canine Good Citizen. Show the world you are dedicated and responsible pet owner. Set a good example and be a model to your friends, your neighborhood, your county and your state.
