After years of research, and preparation, I decided to add to my family and obtain my very first bird, A Solomon Island Eclectus parrot. In my research I discovered a wonderful extract that bird aficionados have been long endorsing. It’s called Grapefruit Seed Extract. Just a few drops in a gallon of water,
Grapefruit Seed Extract can keep your pet’s water cleaner, and help their health internally. This is not just isolated to bird use but has been used with cats, dogs, and horses too. Externally, this amazing stuff can be used as a general antiseptic for cages, crates, kennels, stalls, floors or other areas animals make may contact.  Once I heard about this wonderful stuff I had to investigate further.
The Grapefruit Tree was discovered in the Caribbean Island of Barbados sometime in the 17th century and delivered to Florida in the 1800’s. The name was most likely derived from the way that the fruit grows in "grape-like" clusters on the tree. Grapefruit seed extract is manufactured from the seeds, pulp and white membranes of the grapefruit tree.  Carefully ground into a fine powder, it’s dissolved into a liquid mixture with other natural ingredients.
Grapefruit Seed Extract or commonly called GSE, was developed by a Dr. Jacob Harich a physicist who focused his studies in Immunology.  In the early 60’s he moved to Florida and began researching grapefruit seeds as a natural biocide (a pesticide that can destroy living organisms). By the 1990’s GSE had gained such popularity that holistic practitioners began recommending this to their patients. Harich was also involved in the research of using GSE with HIV patients to combat secondary infections. He was also recognized in Europe, as farmers used this in poultry and fish food to fight such diseases as salmonella and E-coli. Harich passed away in 1996 and researchers continue to investigate the wonderful properties of GSE.
How does one use this and what can you use it for?
