Avon Animal Hospital Reopens as
24/7 Emergency Veterinary Hospital

In emergency medicine, every second counts. That’s why Dr. John Robb, veterinarian and founder of Protect the Pets™, purchased the Farmington Valley Veterinary Emergency Hospital in Avon and re-opened it as a 24-Hour emergency animal hospital dedicated solely to medical emergencies.
Unlike other emergency clinics in the area, Farmington Valley does not run a daytime wellness practice, and is the only animal hospital fully dedicated to treating emergency and critical care cases.
"We operate like your own human hospital’s emergency room, supplementing the care by your primary doctors, and offering the best care in emergency and critical health situations," says Dr. Robb.
Dr. Robb emphasizes this can mean the difference between life and death for animals. Day hospitals practicing wellness medicine are often not prepared to handle emergencies, lacking the technology, staff or time critical to emergency situations. Most do not have overnight technicians to monitor hospitalized animals. In addition, after-hours animal hospitals must discharge their patients to their regular veterinarians in the morning. In cases still in critical condition, this can be detrimental to the pet’s health.
"Many of the animals hospitalized are in critical condition," says Dr. Robb. "Before we opened 24-hours, an animal died in the car on the way back to its regular veterinarian the following morning."
Dr. Robb has invested over $100,000 to update the hospital with of state of the art medical equipment and technology that can facilitate the best emergency care, including digital radiography that will produce high quality, digital x-rays that can be sent to board certified radiologists for immediate consultation, additional blood lab equipment for quick analysis and diagnosis, and a microprocessor controlled anesthesia delivery system to ensure safe anesthesia for critical situations.
"Many day hospitals that lack lab analysis equipment and send blood samples to outside laboratories treat animals for 24 hours without knowing critical information. They are treating without critical information and losing valuable time. We can know this critical information in 30 minutes." says Dr. Robb.
The hospital currently staffs 10 board-certified emergency veterinarians, five certified technicians, three technician assistants and three receptionists.
Farmington Valley is a Protect the Pets™ member veterinary hospital, and is dedicated to providing a high standard of care and service rooted in compassion. Clients are permitted to visit with their pets in the back rooms, unless circumstances are deemed unsafe, are provided counsel over the phone, and instructed on how to care for their pets during their recovery at home. They also treat wildlife brought in at no cost, although donations are accepted, and offer Care Credit to pet owners with financial needs.
"We’re here to support the local veterinarian medical community with emergency care services they can’t provide, and ultimately, save animals lives," says Dr. Robb.
Farmington Valley Veterinary Emergency Hospital is located at 9 Avonwood Road in Avon, Connecticut, just 15 minutes from Hartford. For more information, call 860-674-1886 or visit www.farmingtonvet.com.
