Torrington Kicks Off The Season
with It’s 1st Annual Howliday Jubilee

By Lynn Whittaker
Owner, Bow Wow U
The Torrington Parks and Recreation Department along with Bow Wow U kicked off the holidays in style with their first annual Howliday Jubilee held at the Coe Park Civic Center on November 18th.
The event was the brain child of both Parks and Recs and Bow Wow U and the notion was to promote pets in the community, by featuring a costume contest. There were various categories such as most original, cutest, best group entrant, best trick, and best over all costume.
The day was a complete success with many spectators and 19 entrants. We had dogs of all sizes, shapes with ages ranging from 4 months to 14 years of age.
The costumes were all so different from a "wrapped present" dog to a "medieval horse".
Most of the costumes were holiday related but there were also other non-seasonal costumes represented.
The owners and dogs alike were all pleased and really enjoyed themselves. Despite the amount of dogs, costumes and people in one room, there were no scuffles or disputes among animals or humans.
There were a number of prizes awarded, including gift certificates from PETCO, Groomingdales (a local grooming salon), Litchfield Feed Supply (a local dog food store) and the grand prize was 7 weeks of obedience training donated by Bow Wow U.
There were two judges who worked very hard to make their difficult decisions.
All contestants were invited to participate in the Christmas Village Parade scheduled for December 9th.
Barks in the Park was also present at this great event. They are a local organization formed to promote the creation of a local dog park in Torrington.
